About the Sandy Bottom 8-HourThe Sandy Bottom 8-Hour: It's Just A Training Run is at Sandy Bottom Nature Park in Hampton, VA. This is your chance to dust off the winter cobwebs and make some new running buddies while on a training run on a flat, fast, 3.75 mile loop.

There is a strong emphasis on "It's Just A Training Run" - it's like you're running with 149 of your best-running friends.

It's an old school, low-key event. We'll have lap counters (you yell out your bib number, we write it down). We'll have some aid for you, but you're encouraged to bring your own, too. There is a competitive element, though! So we'll have awards for top runners. Last year's winner, Samantha Bradley, hit a super impressive 42.5 miles on the course and the event record is 43.25. If you set a new overall course record (43.25) or women's record (42.5) or men’s record (43.25) you'll win your race entry fee back.
RefundsThere are no refunds if you cancel your registration. However, if you know you need to cancel, please do so as soon as possible to allow people on the waitlist an opportunity to run. We are limited to strictly 150 people.

About the run itself:Parking & Set Up: Park opens at sunrise and you park and set up anytime after that.

Check In: 7:15 am until 7:45 am

Race starts: 8 am

Race ends: 4 pm

You can run as much or as little as you want (because It's Just A Training Run).

Temperature: It's Hampton Roads, so it could be 30 degrees or 75 - you never know). Year 1 of the event it was quite pleasant (even with a little rain at the start), Year 2 it was super cold. Who knows what 2022 will be like.

Bring your own hydration device - this is a cupless event. We will have water available and some nutritional items available - pre-packaged only due to health code policies. You are encouraged to bring your own nutritional items, too. We'll provide a list of aid station items as the race event nears. Runners are welcomed/encouraged to make an aid station donation - pre-packaged items, please.

The run is 3.75 miles and covers a very easy, navigable loop. The course will be well marked. This is the same course as the 24-Hour Virginia Run for Cancer.

Awards:Keeping with the It's Just A Training Run tradition all runners will earn a sweet homemade medal. We'll also have top 3 awards for women and men.

Facilities & Cost:There's a restroom in the Sandy Bottom Nature Center and it is heated. The large shelter at the park will be rented and used for the run, although you are also asked to bring your own portable chairs (you'll be notified if we can have tents this year). Race registration fees go towards helping cover the cost of the shelter rental, medals, aid station items, and a portion of the registration fee is donated to the Friends of Sandy Bottom.

Sweet ShirtsThis year we'll have a shirt option and you can snag a sweet short-sleeve shirt for just a few bucks. Please add this at checkout - we'll need at least 20 to keep the pricing at the cost we have it for, so consider supporting a small business and order a cool shirt to represent your It's Just A Training Run adventure.

COVID Protocols - as there is an uptick in COVID rates we want to take important precautions to limit contact and potential exposure.

- SAFETY Yellow - if you do not want people running close to you, please wear YELLOW. And if there is someone wearing yellow, please note they would like folks to keep their distance.
- MASKS at check in - Please wear a mask at check in. Odds are it'll be cold and you'll want it on your face anyway to stay warm. :-) You do not need to wear a mask while running. But if you happen to be hanging out at the aid station for a bit (don't do that - run! Beware of the chair - it'll suck you in and you'll just sit there :-P - and also the heated restrooms!) and you're super close to people please also wear one. I know we're outside, but COVID is getting intense again and we want everyone to be safe.

1.  TIMING: This is a manually timed event. Be kind and patient to the volunteers on the first couple of laps - that's usually the busiest time. Each time you come to the turn around you will need to yell out your bib number. Ensure your lap count and our lap count match - we'll yell out the lap you finished and are going out on.

2.  Timeline:
7:15: Gates Open at park: the park opens at sunrise and sunrise January 22 is 7:15 am.
7:25: Check In starts
8:00: Event Starts
3:00: runners can opt to run .5 mile out and backs or the full loop
4:00: Event ends
awards immediately after

3. Check in and Bibs - please check in at the large shelter. You'll see it - don't worry. We will begin check in about 7:25. If you are arriving later in the day (there's at least one event in the 757 that some of you are running) please send me an email as a heads up just so I won't mark you as a DNS.

4.   Here is a link (click here) to the course map. There will be arrows directing you where to go. If there's not a sign, stay on the path and don't go down a different trail - it'll be obvious. The address is 1255 Big Bethel Rd, Hampton VA, 23669
There will be a .5 mile marker for the final hour so you can do 1 mile loops instead of the 3.75 for the last hour. However, if you are leaving early and want a single 1 mile loop you can do that, but only once. The .5 mile loops begin at 3 pm.

5.  We will have top mileage awards for the first three women and men. If there's a tie in miles, the award goes to the person who completed the miles the quickest.

6. All runners will get a finisher medal homemade by yours truly.  Please be sure to check out if you finish early so we know you're done and you get your medal.

7. IMPORTANT- we are not allowed to have tents (including canopy tents). Please do not put tents up. You can have chairs up and please keep those around the start/stop area. We also have the large shelter rented (the one next to the park building). You can set up under there, too. Space will be limited in there.  The park (and I, JATR, Sanzo & Scribner Design, etc...) aren't responsible for anything that may walk away.  It's a great place and I don't anticipate anything happening at all, but I feel like I probably need to make that disclaimer somewhere :-).

 8.  Hydration & nutrition:
In addition to water in our coolers, we will also be able to offer Hammer Nutrition Heed (electrolyte drink).  We aren't able to cook on site (sorry, no hot broth), but the JATR pickles are back by popular demand, along with other aid station faves like swedish fish and coca cola. I am happy to be able to offer this expanded assortment of aid station items. I'll email out the final list of aid station goodies next weekend.

If you have a friend coming to help crew and they're looking for something to do while you're running a lap please encourage them to volunteer. Because of the expanded aid station options I will now need more help to support runners. I offer credit for volunteers and if they aren't runners you can take their credit. Please let me know if someone coming with you will volunteer and share their name and email with me and I can follow up with them.

9. Don’t litter – please, please, please don’t litter. I am hoping to have a sweeper for the run, and I’ll be out on the course looking for remnants, but please be respectful of the park and don’t throw anything on the ground.
    - ALSO - we are using the restrooms at the Sandy Bottom Nature Park. Please - please - please - be mindful this is a public park and the restrooms are open to everyone. Please take care to be neat in the restrooms. Please be mindful to be respectful of the park and the facilities - I'd like to host this again for everyone, meaning we need to "leave no trace". Also, please do not use the park itself as a restroom :-). The main park building doesn't open until 9 - this is the one closest to check in. But there is a restroom facility (heated, too) about a 0.2 walk from check in and this will be open pre-race.

10. We recommend you wear gaiters on the course.

11. Early Packet Pick Up: OPTIONAL -
We are collaborating with St. George Brewing Company in Hampton to offer optional early packet pick up on Friday, January 21 from 4:30 - 6:30. Totally optional, but a great chance to grab your packet (bib and Hammer Nutrition swag), get something good to eat from Nosh, and listen to live tunes by Nick Weber (live music from 5 - 8).

You can still grab your packet the morning of the race, but this is a great option for those that want to avoid the morning packet pick up line. If you're local or staying in a hotel/airbnb/etc near packet pick up Friday night it would help cut down on the morning lines if you could pop over and grab your packet.

Plus, you can show your bib Saturday after your race (St. George opens at noon) and get a $1 off two pints. If you've liked Just A Training Run on Facebook you can find the packet pick up event on the Fb feed and add that to your Fb events line up.
